Spearheading and redefining the semiconductor packaging technology of the world, Dr. Mukta Ghate Farooq has become a name synonymous with innovation, phenomenal intellect and empowering leadership. She is currently a Fellow at GlobalFoundries and the celebrated technology leader for Advanced Silicon Packaging. Dr. Farooq’s remarkable professional journey features a perfect fusion of talent, passion, and astuteness, which she has used to paint a perspective-changing picture of Advanced Silicon Packaging in front of the world.

Dr. Farooq is a world-renowned expert in 3D Copper TSV integrated circuit technology and has exhibited numerous instances of exemplary leadership, most notable of those being her role as the vanguard of a team that achieved the industry’s first-ever logic wafer through Silicon vias which were a groundbreaking achievement in semiconductor technology. With over 200 issued patents and around 2600 citations for more than 250 articles, she has also been a long-serving mentor to professionals in engineering, especially women, at GlobalFoundries, and a member of technical committees at flagship semiconductor conferences. Her blazingly brilliant intellect is manifested in her being invited to teach short courses and give lectures at various universities and symposia, which include Electron Device Society, Women in Engineering events and the South Asian Women's Leadership Forum, and to write seminal papers in her field of expertise.

A strong advocate for STEM outreach in elementary and middle schools, Dr. Farooq completed her B.Tech in 1983 from IIT Bombay following which she went on to pursue her M.S. from Northwestern University and Ph.D. from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, both in Materials Science. She has also very enthusiastically participated to opulently contribute to the establishment of several platforms like the IBM Semiconductor Technology Symposium and the GlobalFoundries Technology Forum.

For her unwavering efforts and sterling work, she has received multiple accolades including the Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater in 2017, the Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, the High-Value Patent Awards and the National Women of Color in STEM - All-Star Technology Award and a nomination to the Alpha Sigma Mu (ASM Honor Society). The list of her glorious achievements has more to go on. She is an IEEE Fellow, IEEE EDS Distinguished Lecturer, a GlobalFoundries Master Inventor, and an IBM Lifetime Master Inventor, including a nomination to the IBM Academy of Technology.

Not all work and no play, a young Dr. Farooq actively participated in literary arts and dabbled in theatre in her college days. Being the Hostel Literary Secretary, she wrote articles for campus magazines and represented Hostel 10 in contests like What's the Good Word, Quiz Contests, Antakshari and won the Inter-Hostel Dramatic Championship in her final year. Theatre, books and cleverness were not all IIT had to offer. Mukta met her amour, Dr. Shaji Farooq there, and married her college sweetheart!

Urging to take the tough road, and to persist and believe in oneself irrespective of the obstacles, Dr. Farooq has created a pioneering impact on her fellow mates and has undoubtedly set a legacy for all the women to look up to.
