The alumni of IIT-B have always made their alma mater proud with their exemplary achievements and enviable display of brilliant skills. Joining this stellar list is Mr. Salil Parekh.

The new year of 2018 will lead to a new chapter in the metaphorical book for the company, Infosys and also vicariously for the Indian IT industry as a whole given that Infosys is the second largest IT services and software firm. Mr. Salil Parekh will be taking the executive reins from the interim CEO and Managing Director of the firm, U B Pravin Rao on January 2 who will continue as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and a whole-time director of the company. This is only the second time when the company is bringing in an outsider, a non-founder CEO for the top job that goes on to show the level of stellar qualification that would have been gauged. Speaking of the man on which the two month long search ended, Mr. Parekh is a graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) in Aeronautical Engineering and also holds a Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University. Working for the French IT services firm, Capegemini for the past 25 years, he was previously a member of the group management board and most recently a member of the group executive board. He was responsible for overseeing a business cluster comprising Application Services and Cloud Infrastructure Services among others.

Commenting on the appointment in a filing on the Bombay Stock Exchange, Nandan Nilekani, one of Infosys co-founders and Aadhaar architect who is also the non-executive chairman of the firm said, "We are delighted to have Salil joining as the CEO & MD of Infosys. He has nearly three decades of global experience in the IT services industry. He has a strong track record of executing business turnarounds and managing very successful acquisitions. The Board believes that he is the right person to lead Infosys at this transformative time in our industry." Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who heads Infosys' nomination and remuneration committee, said that Mr. Parekh was the 'top choice from a pool of highly qualified candidates.' which according to reports included UB Pravin Rao, CFO Ranganath D Mavinakere as well as Ashok Vemuri (former Americas Head and Board member at Infosys) and B G Srinivas (former Infosys President). According to industry watchers, Parekh will face multiple challenges in the new role like maintaining peace between the founders and the management, they said, adding that Parekh's performance would also depend on the how much independence he gets in decision making. Besides, he will have to push further the innovation agenda in areas like cloud, blockchain and analytics given the increasing automation across industries, rapid pace of technology change and increasing visa scrutiny in key markets, they said.

We congratulate Mr. Parekh for adding yet another coruscant feather to his cap and filling the entire IIT-B community’s chest with pride worth boasting about, and we wish him the very best for all his future endeavours.
