Adding to the list of distinctive achievements of IIT Bombay alumni, Prof Janat Shah has been appointed as the director of IIM Udaipur. Read on to get to know about his appointment as Director and his Vision for the Institute.
In May, 2017, the Ministry of Human Resource development (MHRD) delivered a masterstroke against the polemical brain drain of India by reinstating Professor Janat Shah as the director of the Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur. Professor Shah has been holding the title of the director of IIM-U since its very inception in July, 2011. Being with the Institute from the beginning has made him indubitably perceptive of its present issues and also its conceivable future. This action of extending the tenure of the directors of the new IIM’s has had no echoes in the past, making Professor Janat Shah‘s case a precedent to all. On being asked on his tenure, the professor was quoted saying, “Building an educational institute is a 20-year journey but what one does in the initial years has a huge impact. We can take great satisfaction in having made an excellent start. I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue working with our impressive young faculty, highly motivated students and dedicated professional staff”
Holding a vibrant degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) and coupled with the fellowship in Operations Management from IIM, Ahmedabad, the Professor continues his deep passion for teaching various courses in Operations Management, now at his domain of IIM-U. At IIM, Bangalore, Professor Shah, among many things, has served as a prominent member of the board of directors. He has also been the Post Graduate programme chairperson for altogether 3 wondrous years and in the Management Programme for technologist co-ordinator for an entire 1 year. He has served as a member of various other committees, notably including the Institute vision committee. Before all that, he had also been a praised visiting scholar at the grand Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, a visiting faculty at the Logistic Institute at National University of Singapore and a Special Professor at Nottingham University in the United Kingdom. Being acclimated to so many distinguished institutes across the globe has helped him envisage an enviable future for IIM, Udaipur and holding such a spectrum of portfolios has given him the ability to paint it into reality. Professor Janat revealed a little about his vision, for which he might have already started laying the foundational seeds six years back when his tenure as the director began, by stating, “This campus will be the base from which we scale up over the next twenty years to build a management institute of international repute.” Resonating completely with the director’s gloriously bright promise and his plans for the students and the Institute at large, IIM-Udaipur did not shy away from a hearty response. On a Facebook post, IIM-U showing its enthusiasm and also full support to its director, said, “The coming years will take us closer to realize his vision of making IIM Udaipur a world class educational and research institute.” With a solid set base and a supportive and cooperative institute at his command, Professor Janat Shah aims to make IIM- Udaipur one of India’s top 5 research institutes by the year 2020, and he also aspires in having the Institute’s name being known as one of the world’s best research institutes by the year 2030.
Some of the stellar features of the Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur include it being appositely ranked as one of the top 5 B-schools in the country for research, based on the methodology used by the University of Texas, Dallas, which tracks publications in twenty-four leading business journals. It is also in the top fifteen institutes according to the National Institute Ranking Framework i.e. the NIRF rankings published by MHRD. All of these rankings easily get reflected by the growth IIM-U has seen in its number of post graduate programme students. Starting with 57 students in the first batch, there has been more than a 300% increase in the number, there being 240 post graduate students in the incoming batch. All of these students would now enjoy the state of the art facilities and important amenities on a magnificently sprawling campus of 300 acres, now the permanent site of IIM-U, the premier institute among the new IIM’s to have completely shifted.
