Calling the Future
This summer, while half of the world was busy perspiring efforts in hopes of finding clarity in life, some smart IIT-Bians were busy being inspired one call at a time, connecting the Victor Menezes Convention Centre of IIT-B to almost all parts of the country in the 30th Phonathon of SARC. Phonathon is an event conducted by the Student Alumni Relations Cell of IIT-Bombay. The telephonic marathon provides a common interactive platform for students and alumni over direct telephonic conversations.
Leafing through the advantages of participating in Phonathon, one finds them ruling every facet of professional life. Effective communication isn’t an additional skill set anymore but a requisite for survival, virtually impacting every aspect of life. And every call put forth by the volunteers improves their communication skills. The relevance of professionalism is intuitively understood by many yet actively worked upon by few. Phonathon grants volunteers a chance to learn as well as practise maintaining a toned code of conduct that goes beyond politeness while speaking with alumni. The spectrum of works alumni are involved in can only be matched in diversity with the variety of interests held by the volunteers. Tapping such a rich pool of alumni with numbers lying in the ballpark of 5 digits certainly perks up a person’s network. One not only learns about their career but also holds a golden opportunity to get insight on topics ranging from career streams to institute’s cafés. The entire conversation between a volunteer and alumnus can start with a formal ‘good afternoon’ and end with the casual ‘buh-bye’.
The year 2018 witnessed a phenomenal increment in the number of volunteers in the 30th Phonathon, a rise by 111%, throughout the 10 days it was eventuated, from 1st June to 10th June with a total of around 12500 alumni contacted. Students residing in the campus for sports camps, Institute Technical Summer Project (ITSP) and other various reasons alike showed enthusiasm for the event. Beyond the incalculable benefit of experience, the volunteers vied for different prizes like ‘Caller of the day’, ‘Caller of the event’, and ‘Lucky Draw’. Freebies and delicious snacks may have also been the conduits luring the volunteers to join the SARC Side. ‘Helpful’, ‘Enlightening’, ‘Insightful’ were some words drawn from the testimonials.
“The Summer Phonathon is like an oasis; if you feel lost in the blazing heat in any sense, come here for tradecraft, freebies, food and fun.”
Discovering the profound advantages of an event like Phonathon, one can only wait impatiently for the next event of the Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) that would hopefully be soon.
